Googlebook Detachables Will Be Google's Next Form Factor, Company Says
Google says Googlebook detachables will be the next form factor after clamshells and convertibles. The news came out of Android Dev Summit 2026 earlier this week, and Google suggests the devices will arrive soon.
If the terms are new to you, a clamshell is a regular laptop whose screen opens and closes on a hinge. A convertible is still a single body, but its screen can rotate or fold back into tablet mode. A detachable goes a step further: the screen comes off the keyboard and works as a standalone tablet.
What We Still Don't Know About Googlebook Detachables
The source only contains Google's statement above. There are no details yet on specs, pricing, a release date, or which devices will use this format. For now, we wait for the next official announcement.
Since the statement was made at an event for Android developers, it makes sense for developers to start watching where Googlebook is heading. For everyone else, this is so far just a signal of Google's product direction, not enough detail to base a buying decision on.
