OLED MacBook Pro and iPad mini 8 Expected October 28
Apple will announce a second wave of new products on Wednesday, October 28, at an event called Pro and Tell. The name gives away the headliner: an OLED MacBook Pro that is said to be the first Mac with a touchscreen. A few other Macs and a new iPad are also expected to show up.
Like the October 13 Welcome Home announcement, Pro and Tell isn't a traditional Apple event. Some members of the media have been invited to Los Angeles to try the new devices hands-on, while everyone else will follow along through press releases on October 28. Those releases could land at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, when the media session begins, or earlier at around 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, as Apple usually does.
The OLED MacBook Pro with a touchscreen
These high-end MacBook Pro models bring two firsts to the Mac line: an OLED display and a touchscreen. A design change is also expected, but the chips stay the same as the current version. Here's what to expect:
- OLED: better contrast, richer colors, and lower power use. It will be available in both 14-inch and 16-inch sizes.
- Touchscreen: macOS 27 is being prepared for touch gestures. Touch is only a supplement to the trackpad and keyboard, so you can presumably skip it entirely.
- Reinforced hinge: Apple is adding a sturdier hinge so the display won't wobble when you tap it.
- Design: lighter than the current model, with the same sizes.
- Dynamic Island: it replaces the notch.
- Chips: reportedly the same M5 Pro and M5 Max as the models released in March. Apple is said to be skipping the M6 Pro and M6 Max, while the M7 Pro and M7 Max won't be ready until late 2027.
Apple might keep selling the current MacBook Pro and position the OLED version as a pricier, higher-end option. Rumors once suggested it would be called the MacBook Ultra, but it's now clear Apple is sticking with Pro. OLED panels and touch modules both add cost, so the price will almost certainly be higher than today's models.
Entry-level MacBook Pro, iMac, and iPad mini 8
The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro is expected to move to an M6 chip, replacing the M5 it has used since October 2025. Rumors also say the 24-inch iMac gets an M6 too. Neither will change on the outside.
On the iPad side, the iPad mini 8 is expected to arrive with several big changes:
- OLED display: the first iPad other than the iPad Pro to use OLED.
- Vibration-based speakers: no speaker holes, which allows a more water-resistant design. It could be the first iPad with an IP rating, able to handle splashes and possibly even submersion.
- Chip: A20 Pro, the same as in the iPhone 18 Pro models.
- Refresh rate: still unclear whether it stays at 60Hz or moves up to 120Hz ProMotion.
- Front camera: moves from the portrait side to the landscape side, as Apple has done on other iPads.
- Price: waterproofing and OLED are expected to push the price up by around $200 over the current $599 model.
Launch date
After the October 28 debut, the new Macs and iPad could go on sale as early as November 6. If it follows the Welcome Home launch, pre-orders will open on October 28. There's no word yet on official MacBook Pro pricing or availability in Indonesia.
